When I get caught up

I thought I was so busy this spring.

I was serving as the executive director of a tiny school and head coach of two different online workshops. I was working with a few clients and writing regularly. Plus, I had a long commute.

I would regularly work weekends in order to get a little ahead and reduce stress for the week ahead. Thus, I managed to have time for tennis most evenings and had a decent social life as well.

Mercifully finite

Because I am a huge nerd, I like to time my tasks using a stopwatch.

Well, it’s not just because I’m a huge nerd. It’s also because I struggle with executive functioning and I have a terrible sense of time.

In order to be able to gain any mastery over my days, I’ve had to accommodate these weaknesses, so I use external tools like to compensate for my poor internal clock.

One different choice

A movie or novel starts in the moment when something is about to change for our protagonist.

This change is always brought on by some outside force. Dorothy, home and all, is spirited away to Oz, accidentally committing murder in the process. Gandalf shows up and disrupts Bilbo’s peaceful existence. Hagrid comes along and tells Harry he’s been a wizard all along. We’re in for a wild time.

Clearing the hurdles

Today will be the first day that students and teachers at The Little Middle School have had the option of attending school mask-free since March 13, 2020.

I expected to feel excited about that, but instead, I feel a sense of peace and calm. I know that there may be mask-required days in our future, and I am emotionally prepared for that.

For now, life feels a tiny bit easier.

Is it harder, or am I weaker?

I continue to fight my way valiantly through the challenges of life.

Or, at least, that's one interpretation of my current situation. Another is that I am struggling hopelessly with the basics. But I don't think that's the most helpful story to tell.

When it comes to difficulty, perception is reality. If something feels difficult, then it is. The basic respect I offer to my students and clients is to accept this.
