Sometimes, doing work tasks is like doing the dishes after a big meal.

As long as it all gets done, the order isn’t important.

To avoid laboring over the simile, let’s just talk about doing the dishes first.

It might seem like it makes more sense to do the big pots and pans first, but if you have a shallow sink like mine, they might not be able to fit based on what’s already in there.

When playing a musical instrument, proper technique is the path of least resistance.

It only seems more difficult to use correct technique if you’ve developed a habit of playing a different way.

You are actually more effective when you work less hard.

As with a lot of physical skills from weight-lifting to running to using a kitchen knife, refining your technique is actually a matter of removing unnecessary effort, doing the most with the least.

When I first came up with the idea of The Little Middle School, it seemed a bit wild. Me, a music teacher, “homeschooling” a dozen middle schoolers in every subject?

But I had the time (sort of). I had the space: a music school that was empty prior to 3:00 PM each day. What would be the harm in exploring the concept just to see what would happen? If everyone thought it was silly, I’d let it go.

Following the energy

For some reason — maybe hormones, maybe the weather, maybe the moon phase — I am operating with extra energy this week.

Each day, I’m waking up early and getting right to work. Little tasks I’ve been putting off are getting done with no fuss. Big projects are moving forward.

I could keep the same schedule as always, but I’m leaning into it. I’m well aware that this sense of flow may not last, so I’m stepping up my hours and following the energy.
