Your soul’s desire for freedom

I received a jury summons, and it’s looking an awful lot like I’m going to be spending a lot of time at the courthouse in the near future.

This is much better than receiving a court summons, but still.

I went in last week for the first step in the jury selection process, rescheduling all of my meetings so that I could sit in an overheated, high-ceilinged room and stare out the window at the fading sunlight on the bare trees and the hills beyond as a patient judge gave us an eighth-grade civics lesson. Tomorrow, I have to go in again.

The right one

I wrote a script the other day for a video — and then I didn’t record it.

I had expected to deliver this script on camera. However, once I completed it, I thought maybe it would work better as a voiceover. I could create video footage of myself doing activities that would illustrate the ideas I was speaking about.

And thus, I postponed shooting by two days and counting.

Crushed by enthusiasm

As a music teacher, I used to get a lot of calls from parents who were trying to foster their child’s budding interest in an instrument.

It was often a bit of a dance to figure out how to best support these families. Though a two-year-old might be fascinated by seeing someone play the drums, enrolling that tiny person in formal lessons on the drum set is not necessarily developmentally appropriate. I needed to find a way to convey that without damaging the parent’s eagerness to help their child explore music.

Maybe someone has been helped by the idea that there is a divine plan for them — a destiny that was predetermined, combined with gifts that were bestowed upon them at conception.

That destiny is out there, if only they can find it. It is the purpose of a life to solve the mystery of who you are supposed to be and realize your true potential.

Changing the world

Early on in The Marketing Seminar, participants are asked what change they are trying to make and who they are trying to change.

Seth Godin’s definition of marketing is to make a change happen. Therefore, your marketing needs to change somebody. Who? And how?
