More margin

I find myself these days with more free time than I used to have.

I am still getting used to it. Time still feels scarce. I am accustomed to looking at the clock and feeling a sense of panic, no matter what time it is. These perceptions and habits I have with respect to time are carried over from my old life, and it’s an ongoing process to establish new ones.

The other day, I had a new project launching, plus double my usual number of meetings.

I also had been away. That meant that I had a bunch of bags to unpack, there was little in the way of groceries, and I stayed up too late.

I’m sure there are plenty of people who would be fine with all of that, but a lack of food and sleep easily throws off my equilibrium. I had to figure out what to do to make it work.

The same old mistakes

Graphs and charts can be deceiving.

If you look at the jagged rise and fall of, say, shares of a company stock, what you see might cause concern. The value might appear to have dropped precipitously, so low that it’s impossible to recover.

Then, you might look at the y axis and realize that you’re observing the pattern over a single hour. When you zoom out to view a month, a year, or a decade, the lines look different. The volatility you saw in a short period of time is just a blip, a bit of variation in a larger upward or downward trend.

Nobody gets it all

Working with fellow business owners, I see patterns arise in the concerns and insecurities we share.

It is common for these leaders, be they entrepreneurs or freelancers, to believe that they aren’t real business owners for one reason or another.

Their website still needs work. Their social media accounts are placeholders. They haven’t figured out how to file their quarterly taxes. They’re just winging it when it comes to sales.
